More Information

Arc Flash & Electrical Hazards  – You never can be too prepared!

Electrical hazards exist everywhere we go and everywhere we are.  When we’re driving down the highway, grabbing a bite to eat, waiting in line at the grocery store, we tend to forget the infrastructure that surrounds us every night and day.  Even when we sleep…  Electricity doesn’t sleep!

Working around high-powered industrial equipment greatly increases the risk of exposure to these hazards at a much higher cost, and it is up to us to mitigate these risks!  Understanding what is required of us to help do just that is what sets us apart, not only as a service provider, but an end user of such powerful utilities.  It is a matter of life and death.

So where do we start?  First, we must determine what regulation is in place to protect our workforce.

OSHA – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is the familiar agency that works, “to assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.”

NFPA – The National Fire Protection Agency is the leading authority on how to determine the risk of arc flash and provides electrical safety awareness.  “Originally developed at OSHA’s request, NFPA 70E,” (standard), “helps companies and employees avoid workplace injuries and fatalities due to shock, electrocution, arc flash, and arc blast, and assists in complying with OSHA 1910 Subpart S and OSHA 1926 Subpart K”  “NFPA 70E Standard Development – www.nfpa.org“

Okay!  So what does this mean for you?  TDI Refrigeration is dedicated making sure our technicians, engineers, administrators, and CUSTOMERS are not only aware of the dangers, but also what to do in order to decrease the risk of exposure to electrical hazards, such as: arc flash, arc blast, shock and electrocution.

TDI Refrigeration trains each employee utilizing NFPA 70E guidelines to both understand the requirements and implement the tools necessary to work around electrical equipment utilizing such things as Category 2 arc flash gear, lock out and tag out kits, and electrical safety gloves to do each job right and safe!

What about you?  TDI Refrigeration does its best to help inform customers of the dangers they face in real time, reporting when the hazards exist, and making sure to implement the knowledge acquired to help eliminate those hazards.

Have you had an arc flash analysis performed at your facility?  According NFPA 70E, an arc flash risk assessment is required to be re-done every 5 years.  This allows your workers, and the contractors you hire, to be aware of the hazards that exist to properly utilize the personal protective equipment they need to work on your equipment safely.  These analyses help to determine how much energy can be uncontrollably expelled from any piece of equipment or electrical panel due to failure and lets the worker know where the limits are with the equipment they have.

TDI Refrigeration is obligated to assist in any way possible when it comes to safety.  Not only will we take safety seriously, but we are also enthusiastic to help guide our customers on the path necessary to protect their workers, the same way we are obligated to protect ours.
