TDI Refrigeration was awarded a $3M+ project in 2017. Construction began in 2018. The system was successfully started in 2019.
The system is comprised of two Frick RWFII-480 vertical screw compressors. Each compressor is equipped with a 1500hp motor running on 4160 voltage. Each compressor is capable of 1070TR at 18°F SST and 99°F SCT running on ammonia refrigerant. Only one compressor is required for operation. The other compressor is 100% redundant. The compressors have two means of oil cooling. Glycol cooled is the primary means. If glycol cooling is not available, liquid injection kicks in. The compressors are flash economized for higher efficiency operation when loaded above 80% slide valve.
There are three flooded plate and frame evaporators. Each evaporator is rated at 565TR chilling 40% ethylene glycol from 24°F to 21°F at a flow rate of 5,450gpm. Only two evaporators are required to handle the load. The other evaporator is 50% redundant. The 60” diameter surge drums are oversized to handle additional surge if something goes wrong.
The two large rooftop shell and tube condensers utilize nearby lake water. The saltwater (brine) from the lake is a fairly constant 75°F year around. Each condenser requires 1105gpm to do its job. There is a third smaller shell and tube condenser that cools ammonia gas which utilizes a potassium sulfate solution. This condenser improves the efficiency of the overall processing system by preheating the potassium sulfate with waste heat from the refrigeration system. Any two of the three condensers can support the condensing load.
The high-pressure receiver (60” diameter x 246” long) can hold up to 12,124 lbs of ammonia at 90% full. The ammonia system charge is 11,500 lbs.
The pump-out compressor is a Vilter 452XLD with 30HP direct-drive 900rpm motor. It is nominally rated at 23TR at 20°F SST and 98°F SCT. The pump-out compressor can pull all vessels (except the HPR), compressors and heat exchangers into a vacuum making them safe to work on.
The compressor room is cooled by three exhaust fans which move outside air through the compressor room when the temperature outside is less than 80°F. When the outside air is above 80°F, the compressor room cooling coil maintains room temperature. When the cooling coil is on, the louvers are closed.
